The Klezmatics

Klezmatics are a Grammy Award winning American neo-klezmer music group based in New York, who became famous by singing in several languages, particularly the elderly Yiddish melodies mixed with other types of more contemporary music of various origins. Current includes composers Matt Darriau, wind instruments, and Frank London on trumpet, Paul Morrissett play the bass and cymbals tsimbl, vocalist Lorin Sklamberg on accordion, and Lisa Gutkin on violin. Past includes David Licht on drums, Alicia Svigals the violin, David Krakauer, Margot Leverett, and Kurt Bjorling on clarinet. Frequent visitor to the group included Boo Reiners, Susan McKeown, and drummers Richie Barshay and Aaron Alexander. The group was formed in the East Village New York in 1986. They have appeared many times on television, including a series of PBS Great Performances with Itzhak Perlman. Their songs are sung in English and Yiddish. They recorded pieces in Aramaic and the Bavarian Schneider-Zwiefacher and Shvaign = toyt. Klezmatics tickets appeared live, in June 2003, in cooperation with the Jenaer Philharmonie Jena, Germany. They also participated in cross-cultural cooperation, especially with the Palestinian musician Simon Shaheen.Their latest album, Wonder Wheel, The Klezmatics event each round, unique take on klezmer with the English lyrics of American folk icon Woody Guthrie. The album won a Grammy in the category of Best Contemporary World Music Album at the 49 th annual Grammy Award nominations. Another album of material Guthrie, entitled Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkahaudio, was released by JMG in August 2006. Guthrie’s granddaughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie was a guest with them.
