The Builders And The Butchers

Thursday 22 October 2009 @ 5:16 am

Alaska is the most unlikely origin for the five young people who are the builders and the butchers. In the period 2002-2005, each of the members, which will eventually form the group moved to Portland from Alaska conducts music as a means to avoid negative temperatures and the endless darkness of winter. Shortly after moving in Portland, Ryan Sollee, songwriter, singer and guitarist for builders and butchers tickets, plunged in up to 1950′s American music, and began writing stories southern gothic theme song “I was raised on punk rock, but when I moved to Portland, I discovered the roots of American music, I felt as though there were similarities between the two styles. They are both a genre that can not passively listen, they almost reach out and an immediate response from you. “It was a typical rainy day in Portland in the house of Rudy Ray (who plays “Drums” builders), hanging with friends, when Ryan decided to show them that it works. Something clicked that day and within a few minutes to all those present to find something to play. Alex Ellis happened to have an old acoustic bass guitar, and Harvey Tumbleson took mandolin, Ray sat at the piano, and they just started to play. Paul Power joined the group in a week as a drummer and instrumentalist, and the builders and the butchers were born. The builders And The Butchers event did not pay tribute to the old America, they channel it. All key documents exist, acoustic bass, drums, guitar, banjo, mandolin. They are a mixture of gospel, blues and bluegrass and the cry of a desperate story of songs that catch in your brain and require immediate attention.
